Injectables

An injectable is a substance that restores a more youthful appearance to the face and body. There are two main groups: fillers and neuromodulators. These are some of the most favored non-surgical skin rejuvenation procedures available today. While fillers take effect in the dermis layer of the skin and replenish higher-quality collagen and elastin within the skin, neuromodulators enter the facial muscle and facilitate a smoothing effect on the skin. Some fillers’ microspheres create a scaffold within the skin to create the volumizing effects, whereas those made with hyaluronic acid draw in water to accomplish the same aesthetic outcome.

About Injectables

“Injectables” is a term that refers to various substances injected into the skin to restore a more youthful appearance to the face and body. Injectables are characterized into two main groups:

  • Fillers and biostimulatory molecules fill in/restore lost volume to various areas of the face and body.
  • Neuromodulators (i.e. Botox/Dysport/Xoemin/Jeuveau) soften overactive muscle movement that cause wrinkles.

Injectable Fillers and Biostimulatory Molecules in Beverly Hills

Dr. Kiripolsky is a board-certified dermatologist and fellow-trained cosmetic and laser surgeon, highly-regarded for her expertise in Beverly Hills for treating stubborn skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, melasma, skin discoloration, eczema, sun damage, and chronic skin diseases. She is also an author, speaker, researcher, and teacher of cosmetic surgery and lasers. At her dermatology office in Beverly Hills, you can see how Dr. Kiripolsky can help you with various dermatology procedures, including fillers and biostimulatory molecules such as:

Juvéderm

All Juvéderm products contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a lubricating substance that attracts water underneath the skin, helping it maintain hydration while creating a plumping effect. (1) Injectors administer this FDA-approved filler just below the surface of the skin to restore youthful volume, fill out wrinkles, and create a more refreshed appearance. Most patients receiving these injections experience some mild swelling and bruising, but overall, there are no severe side effects to hyaluronic acid fillers. Juvéderm lasts approximately 6 to 12 months, depending on the formulation and the patient’s metabolism.

Vollure

Vollure is an FDA-approved dermal filler composed of hyaluronic acid that is specifically designed for the nasolabial folds and “parenthesis” around the mouth. It is the longest-lasting filler for the mid-face (up to 18 months). It uses Vycross Technology, which is a unique cross-linking of both high and low-weight hyaluronic acid molecules. Vollure is capable of providing support and subtle augmentation to facial wrinkles and nasolabial folds. The best candidates for this injectable are patients with mild to moderate nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Voluma

Voluma is one of the only hyaluronic acid fillers that instantly volumizes the cheek area. It is made of shorter chains of hyaluronic acid with many “cross-links.” It is most suitable for the mid-face, but injectors can also use it to contour the temples and jawline.

Volbella

Volbella is a “gel implant” that was initially indicated for lip plumping, but it can also smooth out other skin texture concerns. For example, Volbella can also address minor acne scarring and effectively diminish the appearance of “platysmal bands,” the horizontal lines on the neck area, by smoothing and filling them out. It can also be used to reduce hollowness under the eyes.

Restylane- L

Restylane is another hyaluronic acid dermal filler that resolves moderate to severe facial wrinkles and nasolabial folds. Injectors may also apply it for lip enhancement and utilize it off-label for hollowness under the eyes, commonly referred to as “tear troughs”. In addition to marionette lines and nasolabial folds, Restylane-L can also treat smaller vertical lip lines and lines at the corners of the mouth.

Restylane- Lyft

Restylane Lyft is another hyaluronic acid filler that injectors can administer into the backs of the hands to eliminate prominent veins and tendons, but it is also suitable for various areas of the face. Injectors commonly use it to correct moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, but sometimes use it to restore the youthful contours of the cheeks.

Restylane- Silk

Restylane Silk is hyaluronic acid-based filler designed specifically for augmenting lips and reducing wrinkles around the mouth, such as “smoker’s lines”. Dr. Kiripolsky can also use it to eliminate horizontal lines on the forehead, lines on the neck, and crow’s feet.

Restylane Refyne & Defyne

Restylane Refyne & Defyne are hyaluronic fillers designed to smooth out laugh lines. They are newer fillers that are flexible enough to move alongside the surrounding skin, promoting natural facial expressions. Defyne is a gel-like product made to smooth out deep wrinkles, while Refyne is a much lighter product to correct finer lines. Dr. Kiripolsky applies Defyne in locations such as the nasolabial folds, the cheeks, marionette lines, and the jawline.

Restylane Contour

Restylane Contour is one of the latest FDA-approved fillers in the Restylane collection. It specifically treats hollowness and contour deficiencies in the mid-face and cheeks. Contour can last for up to 48 weeks, making it one of the most advanced options for hyaluronic acid. For the most optimal effect, Dr. Kiripolsky may use more than one syringe. Occasional touch-up treatments may be required to create a sustainable long-term outcome.

Restylane Kysse

Restylane Kysse can volumize the lips, smooth out “smoker’s lines”, and improve natural lip color. Though Kysse is able to last up to 12 months, it is more likely to last between 6 and 12 months. This is due to the high level of movement in the lips, making them more prone to filler dissolution. Dr. Kiripolsky recommends touch-ups for optimal results.

Belotero

Belotero is a prescription hyaluronic acid injection approved to resolve moderate to severe nasolabial folds and smooth out more superficial creases. This hyaluronic acid filler can effectively and safely erase fine lines on various areas of the face.

Sculptra

Sculptra is a biostimulatory filler, so it triggers the skin to produce more collagen over time. Dr. Kiripolsky may recommend “layering” Sculptra with multiple sessions to gradually create the desired volume. Studies show that Sculptra results can last about 2 years. (2) Most often, this filler is designed to restore volume in sunken areas like the temples, cheeks, along the jawline, and more pronounced facial folds. As with any injectable filler, some may experience mild side effects like bruising or swelling, however Dr. Kiripolsky’s injection techniques can help mitigate these effects.

Radiesse

Radiesse is another biostimulatory filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHa)- a biocompatible mineral- carried by water-based gel molecules. While Radiesse can resolve deep wrinkles and nasolabial folds, Dr. Kiripolsky can also administer it to the back of the hands to hide prominent veins and tendons. Like Sculptra, it tends to last longer than hyaluronic acid fillers. Studies show that it can continue to trigger collagen production for 9 months. (3)

Injectable Neuromodulator Procedures in Beverly Hills

Injectables

Dr. Monika Kiripolsky of MKMD offers patients of all ages the latest techniques using cutting-edge technology to treat a wide range of cosmetic dermatology conditions including acne, acne scarring, uneven skin color (including melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), redness (broken capillaries, rosacea, and poikiloderma), aging skin, scars, unwanted/excess fat, and overall skin improvement. Her goal is for you to love your skin to the extent that you no longer feel the need to wear makeup or apply filters in any of your selfies. With injectable neuromodulators made of botulinum toxin, you can take one step closer to restoring the skin texture of your youth.

Botox

Botox was the first botulinum toxin injectable approved by the FDA. This compound is a byproduct of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which works by blocking acetylcholine neurotransmitters within the muscle. Botox can erase the appearance of glabellar lines between the brows, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. For medical purposes, it can also alleviate symptoms associated with migraines, amblyopia (lazy eye), temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, and hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating. (4)

Jeuveau

Jeuveau is made of the same compound as Botox and is designed to improve and smooth out moderate or severe glabellar lines, “bunny lines” of the nose, forehead wrinkles, wrinkles around the mouth, and platysmal bands (neck lines). While Jeuveau is similar to Botox, it undergoes a different purification process.

Xeomin

Xeomin can resolve the same cosmetic and medical concerns as Botox and Jeuveau. However, unlike them, Xeomin lacks complexing proteins found in Clostridium botulinum, which are deemed unnecessary. Xeomin lasts approximately 3 to 4 months.

Dysport

Dysport is another type of botulinum toxin injection that is FDA-approved to improve the appearance of wrinkles and unwanted facial lines. It works similarly to Botox, but it can sustain results for about 4 to 6 months, which is longer than Botox’s usual 3 to 4 months.
