Before and After Photos
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory disease of the immune system. Almost all of the time, it begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. In infants and young children, eczema is frequently found on the cheeks, face, and neck. In kids, it is often found behind the knees and in the folds of the arms. In adults, it is often found on the hands, knees, arms, and eyelids. Itching is the most common symptom of eczema. The severity of itching can often disturb one’s sleep. Scratching areas of eczema often leads to skin thickening (lichenification) over time.
Although there is no cure for eczema, there are effective treatment options available. Successful treatment begins with repairing the damaged skin barrier using gentle cleansers and medically approved topicals. Once identified, subsequent avoidance of triggers is important. Anti-inflammatory topical creams are most commonly used to treat flare-ups. Antihistamines and other oral medications can also be recommended to control itching.
