SCLEROTHERAPY
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a popular method for eliminating varicose, reticular, and telangiectatic (“spider”) veins. During sclerotherapy, a solution called “sclerosing agent” is injected into the veins. The majority of people who have sclerotherapy will see improvement. The number of treatments needed to improve or clear the condition differs from patient to patient depending upon the extent of varicose, reticular, or telangiectatic veins present. Six or more treatments may be needed, however, the average is three to four treatments.
What to expect after the treatment:
The most common side effect associated with sclerotherapy is mild itching along the route of the vein. This itching normally lasts one to two hours but may persist for a day or so. Approximately 10% of patients who undergo sclerotherapy notice a discoloration of light brown to bluish streaks on the skin after treatment.
How long is the recovery?
After the treatment, you may resume regular activities. You are encouraged to walk for 30-45 minutes after the procedure. The more you walk daily, the better. You are advised to avoid strenuous physical activities such as high-impact aerobics, running, and abdominal crunches or leg lifts for one week following your treatment. It is also important to note that you will need to wear support stockings 24 hours a day for one week (including in the shower). You will have to avoid sitting in baths or jacuzzis for 2 weeks following your procedure (showers are okay).
